On the Cowboys’ inability to sign Derrick Henry, Jerry gives an absurd reply in 2024

Derrick The Dallas Cowboys were interesting to Derrick Henry, but they never got in touch. Jerry Jones attempted to address the matter directly while outlining his justification.

The Dallas Cowboys have one of the NFL’s most dubious offensive stables going into Week 1 of 2024. Although Rico Dowdle appears to be the starting carrying back, Ezekiel Elliott is listed as the starter for now. From there, Dalvin Cook is on the practice squad and Frank Vaughn and quarterback Hunter Luepke are on the active roster.

Elliott and Cook may be well-known, but they weren’t the same guys we saw at their best last season. Even so, Dallas has plenty on their plate, but this wasn’t needed. In the offseason, they had a few possibilities, and Derrick Henry seemed potentially the best match. Worse, Derrick Henry showed interest in the America’s club, but Jerry Jones, the club owner, said they felt secure enough to pursue Elliott after his New England season.

Since Jones only moved the conversation to Elliott, he didn’t really respond to the question. He might say that he was attempting to prevent tampering, but the reality would be far more upsetting. Henry, who rushed for 1,167 yards as well as 12 touchdowns in 2023, agreed to a two-year, $16 million contract with a $20 million cap.

That was less than what they paid Elliott in 2022 and more at the top end for Tony Pollard in 2023. Jones didn’t thoroughly evaluate what Derrick Henry had done because he didn’t feel comfortable shelling out top cash for an offensive player following his burn injury. Rather, he answered “no thank you,” comparing him to what Elliott & Pollard had given him.

It’s arguable whether or not Elliott was truly better in 2023 than he was given credit for. Despite finishing with 642 yards, he only managed three touchdowns via the air and five through receptions. In addition, he only managed a career-low 3.5 yards per endeavour as opposed to Henry’s 4.2.

Another assertion made by Jones was that Elliott did earn crucial carries for the Patriots, especially during the closing moments. The issue is that need, not effectiveness, was the reason for this. Rhamondre Stevenson, the star running back, missed the last five games of the season. Zeke never had a total of 68 yards in a game when he was out (he had 22 touches in Week 14), and he only managed less than 30 yards twice. Worse, from Weeks 14 to 16, he had three straight games with fewer than three yards per attempt.

He gained 213 yards on 72 tries for a mean of 2.95 yards per carry over his last five starts. In contrast, Derrick Henry completed his final game with 19 attempts for 153 yards as well as a score (8.05 average). Having said that, the Cowboys took the cheapest choice, in their humble view. Not the greatest one. a person like Jones is unwilling to be open about it, they must now accept it.
