Japan: After four decades, Prince Hisahito became the first male member of the royal family to reach maturation in 2024

On Friday, Prince Hisahito of Japan turned eighteen, making history as the first male member of the family of the monarch to attain maturity in almost forty years.

For the Japanese royal family, who have controlled for over 1,000 years, this is  monumental event.

With just four males left in the 17-member, all-adult royal family, Prince Hisahito is the youngest.

The younger brother of Japanese Emperor Naruhito is Hisahito, who has been projected to succeed his uncle as ruler of Japan at some point.

The 1947 Royal House Law states that only a male royal member is eligible to take the throne and that female royal members who wed commoners forfeit their position as royalty.

The traditional pre-war family norms are primarily upheld under the Imperial House Law.

The sole surviving member of Naruhito and his Harvard-educated former diplomat wife Masako, Prince Hisahito elder cousin Princess Aiko is seen as the public’s favourite to become the empress in the future. However, she is not allowed to assume that role by law.

Prince Hisahito, who was born on the sixth of September 2006, is a third-year scholar at Otsuka, the University of Tsukuba’s Senior High School.

Hisahito stated in a statement, “Right now, I really want to cherish the time that remains in high school.”

According to the statement, he has a lifelong fascination with insects and has written together an article around a study of flies on the estate of his Tokyo mansion in Akasaka.

Additionally, the Imperial Household Agency said that Prince Hisahito’s Growing up ceremonies and news conference will take place in the spring of 2025, at the latest, after he graduates from high school.

A panel of experts commissioned by the government in January 2022 suggested that in order to stop the monarchical family’s group from declining, the government agencies should consider allowing female members to maintain their royal status after marriage. Meanwhile, male descendants of now-defunct royal families should be adopted in order to carry on the male lineage with distant relatives.

The emperor in power at the moment is Naruhito, based on the succession chart. The next in line is his brother Akishino. The next person is Akishino’s son, Hisahito.
