He was an Indian poet, playwright, and painter, as well as a physician. He has also been educated at St. Xavier’s High School and Grant Medical College, Mumbai. After becoming a doctor, he initially worked in a government job with respect to his native village of Nargol in southern Gujarat. Then continued his work as a general practitioner in Mumbai until the retirement in the year 2005.

Gieve Patel Career:

His poetical work which includes poems have been launched by Nissim Ezekiel Vah, followed by How Do You with Stand, Body, and Mirrored Mirroring. One of the common themes throughout his work is the relationship between his land-downing family and the tribal Warlis who have been working in their estate.

He also conducted a poetry workshop at Rishi Valley School for more than a decade and as also be edited a collection of poetry published in 2006. Poetry has been included in the Anthology of Contemporary Indian Poetry. One office poem license from the collection How Do You Stand is included in the anthology Confronting Love, edited by Arundhati Subramanyam and Jerry Pinto. He was also featured in the poetry anthology The Golden Treasure of the Writer’s Workshop, Calcutta. He had also translated the poems of this 70th-century Gujarati poet Akho into English.

Gieve Patel Paintings:

His paintings received public attention when he painted the politician series in the late 1960s and early 1970s. After the politician series, his most known artwork was the Railway Platform series. This painting originated with respect to his experiences of sitting on a bench in a suburban railway station and watching the trains arrive and depart. One of the interesting aspects of the paintings is that he does not paint with a single person on the platform, and the platform is completely devoid of people. It is the moment when one train arise the crowd leaves, and the passengers of the other train are yet to arrive. Also, the platforms are always crowded, and one feels the painter longing to find you in the chaos of the city, which is evident in the serene images in his paintings.

For the last 20 years, the subject that had kept him preoccupied was the idea of looking into a well. The well in his native village, Nargol, and its vicinity are not that Deep. Most of the time, one can easily break down and touch the water in the well. One can see the sky as well as clouds reflected in the water along with the surrounding mountains, trees, and bushes. He also painted a series based on this view of the well, which is titled Looking into a Well. While these are considered to be paintings of nature, the act of looking at nature appeared to be like peering into his own mind.
